Endless Stream of Choice

Improving Systems and Habits

Using systems and habits to improve your life is a proven method to succeed. It requires seeing the work as a system and then adjusting your thoughts and behaviors to be able to take advantage of your opportunities in life.

Endless Stream of Choice

Scott Miker

In life, we are faced with an endless stream of choices, both big and small. Some of these choices are major life decisions we make as we age, while others are subtle choices that we may not even notice. However, it is important to remember that we always have options, even if they may not be ideal.

One common tendency that many of us fall into is to avoid making a deliberate choice and instead accepting the default option. We may procrastinate or avoid participating in the decision-making process because we don't like any of the options presented to us. But even though we may think we are not deciding, we are still held accountable for the outcome. This can lead to feelings of stress, unhappiness, and a sense of being punished or victimized.

The key to getting around this is to recognize that the options we have in life are not between a perfect path and a flawed path. In reality, there are many flawed paths, and we need to be prepared to accept that there will be challenges and difficulties in whatever path we choose.

When we are faced with difficult decisions, it can be easy to get bogged down in the search for a perfect option. We may spend hours brainstorming solutions, pointing out the flaws in each one, and feeling like nothing is the right choice. But as we continue to explore all options, we eventually realize that we have reached a point of diminishing returns. At this point, it is important to understand that we have control in the situation, and we must make a choice, flaws and all.

This approach not only allows us to take control of the direction we are going in life, but it also helps us to see problems early and address them before they become bigger issues. We also learn to take responsibility and hold ourselves accountable for the choices we make.

Instead of searching for perfect options, we must learn to live in the reality before us and understand that the default option is not always the best choice. By learning how to choose between a bunch of bad options, we gain control and take ownership of our lives. The control we gain is much more valuable than any value we get by choosing the default option all the time. So, let's stop searching for perfection, and start taking control of our lives.

Once we do this, something incredible will happen. You will start to understand your life more. You will be able to connect your wants with the steps you will need to take.

This may change your goals. Once you see the hardships required, you may decide the goal was silly and a different one is more applicable.

As you begin making choices, this will change your recurring behavior. It will form new habits. You will start to become proactive. Instead of sitting back and reacting with commentary, you will jump in and take action.

If you are in a leadership role, this will become contagious. Your staff will see your approach and begin to see you as a proactive leader. Often, they start to mimic this behavior.

The power and control we have in life are often buried under bad habits that give away our ability to impact our life. Then we complain about those external factors determining our life. We never stop to realize that it was us all along who created this structure, this system.

Since we created it, we can change it. We can take different steps but follow the same pattern to reintroduce decision-making into our lives. This will unlock life so you can begin living the life you desire, instead of the one you feel you are stuck with.
